1975 VW LT 28/31/35/50
'Standard drive' for VW absolute uncharted territory |
Cooperations are difficult. Initially, Daimler obviously does not want to and VW builds the new Lasten Transporter (Load transporter) itself. Nevertheless with the second and third generation they will
cooperate, which probably the Daimler plant in Dusseldorf uses to its capacity. And for the second generation of the Crafter they go apart again, because probably the Sprinter alone means enough work for the plant
in the future.
You notice it to the LT, it is completely redeveloped. The petrol engine is still group-owned, but the diesel engine comes from Perkins, will be replaced in 1978 by an own development, which then replaced at Volvo the
Perkins diesel, too. Also for the four-cylinder comes in 1982 from this further developed six-cylinder gasoline engine.
All possible variants from the LT are developed relatively quick. The number in the type designation indicates the total weight, which is increased via intermediate stages to a maximum of 5 tons. The heavy vehicles
are delivered exclusively with a rigid front axle and optional twin tires at the rear. The steering is converted to a recirculating-ball one, five gears are introduced, the headlights get square shape.
15-seater and station wagon are added.

With the first LT, the engine takes up a lot of space between the two individual seats. Later, the engine are tilted and moved back slightly, so that now a passenger seat and enough foot space in the middle is also
possible in the second row. 12/17
